Overview

Fronallt is a timber-framed cottage built in the 1930s that sits on a hillside just 10 minutes walk from the beach and 6 minutes walk from Fairbourne Railway station.

We bought the house in 2018 with the vision of renovating it so that we could make it a place where we could come to escape our everyday lives. The renovation has taken us over three years of back-breaking work, involving stripping the entire building back to the timber frame and then rebuilding it with modern environmentally sensitive insulation, using techniques that non-builders like us could achieve ourselves.

Now we want to share it with other people.

Scroll down for more information about the layout of the house, a little about its history and the local area. If you are already convinced, you can send a booking request using our availablity checker, or if you need more information, just contact us.

Room by Room

The living room has a wood-burning stove, comfortable seating for 8, and amazing views to the sea and the distant Llyn Peninsula beyond.

The Kitchen is well equipped featuring a double oven, 3 induction and one electric hotplates and fridge with small freezer compartment. The dining area features seating for 8.

The bathroom features a freestanding bath, separate shower cubicle and a toilet. There is also a separate W/C downstairs

Behind the kitchen there is a lean-to which contains a washing machine and tumble drier. This is also a space where you can dry clothes after a wet walk!

The “King Size” bedroom has views towards the sea and Barmouth. There is a 160×200 king size bed.

The Double bedroom also has views out to the sea. It features a small foldable writing desk and a 140×200 double bed.

The twin room is the only carpeted bedroom (the others have wooden floors and rugs). It features two 90×200 single beds. (Dog not included)

The attic is a large open plan space that features a 135×190 small double in a sleeping nook.

It also has a desk area with sea views, and a seating area with TV that contains two additional folding 75×190 single beds.

The Garden is built into a steep hillside with narrow terraces and steep drops.

There is a small grassed area at the top ideal for picnicking and a small grassed area next to the house ideal for alfresco dining. Neither is really big enough for ball games though. There is also a veranda at the front which is great for watching the sunset with a beer.

Because the house is built into a hillside, there are steps up to the house from the road and a steep doorstep into the house itself. For that reason unfortunately it’s unsuitable for wheelchairs.

History of Fronallt

Final bits of work being done to the external cladding

The house is a 1930s timber framed bungalow that we have completely rebuilt over the course of 3 years.

While we used local contractors to do the major work…

…much of the work was done by us.

That included all of the natural wood-fibre insulation, installation of the kitchen and bathrooms, the wooden wall and ceiling panelling, external timber cladding and even the three coats of invisible fireproof paint on the walls!

Because none of us are professional builders or carpenters and we’ve been learning as we go, some of the finishes are… a little rough around the edges, but they all add character and make Fronallt the unique, cozy house it’s become.

The Local Area

Fronallt is on the outskirts of the small village of Fairbourne, just 10 minutes walk to Fairbourne beach, a 2 mile stretch of sand that slopes very gently into the sea.
